Thoughts on Food & Gardening...

Eating locally, whether it’s homegrown, bought or traded, is about more than just delicious eats - though that’s certainly an important part of it. It’s also about making choices, whether they are intentional or not, about the kind of present and future we support. Food choices are directly related to climate change, social justice and equity, community connections, history & culture, our own own health wellness, and the health of our environments and the creatures we share them with. Considering we eat both for our daily survival and enjoyment alike, the world of food is a rich and valuable topic for educational explorations, and yet it’s left almost entirely out of educational systems.

Gardens, especially kitchen gardens where much of the food is grown for culinary purposes, make for a lively and engaging classroom setting - most things that children are expected to learn in school, can be learned just as well, and for some kids better than, in traditional classroom settings. I want my daughter to grow up with a deep understanding and of, and appreciation for the seed-to-table process. This is one of the many reasons why we chose the homeschool path, and the primary reason for sharing the learning experiences that come out of Our Homeschool Garden.
